GENERAL INFORMATION

Established by the Council of Ministers Decision No. 2002/3651 dated 14.01.2002, Gaziantep University Faculty of Education, which is one of the six departments of Gaziantep University Faculty of Education established by the Council of Ministers Decision No. 2002/3651 dated 14.01.2002, started its activities by admitting its first students in the academic year 2022-2023. The Department of Special Education, which is one of the six departments of Gaziantep University Faculty of Education, offers education with its Special Education Teacher Education Bachelor's program and has four academic staff members, including three doctorate faculty members and one research assistant in the doctoral education process. The Department of Special Education has three sub-departments: "Department of Mental Disabilities Education," "Department of Visual Impairments Education," and "Department of Hearing Impairments Education." The department offers specialization in Hearing Impairments Education.

Program Objective

The main objective of the special education teacher education bachelor's program is to train teachers who understand the place of their profession in social development, aim to ensure the independence, productivity, and active participation of individuals with special needs in society, have acquired ethical responsibility, adopted a scientific thinking style, and effectively use information and communication technologies to educate individuals with special needs at the preschool, primary, secondary, and university levels.

Program Features

The program is conducted in Turkish and offers full-time daytime education. The Special Education Teacher Education Bachelor's Program consists of a total of 240 ECTS credits. The current course catalog and course contents are provided below. In addition to the compulsory courses that must be taken in the undergraduate program, there are also elective courses. Graduates of Gaziantep University Special Education Teacher Education program will specialize in Hearing Impairments Education. Therefore, as stated in the Higher Education Council's (YÖK) Special Education Teacher Education Bachelor's Program, students must complete a total of six elective courses from all special education field courses (Mental Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Difficulties, Special Talents, Hearing Impairments, and Visual Impairments) and seven courses from specialization area courses in hearing impairments education to complete their education.

Degree Earned

Graduates who successfully complete the program with all its requirements receive a "Bachelor's Degree in Special Education Teacher Education."

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program is based on the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) conducted by ÖSYM. Recognition of prior learning is carried out within the framework of the "Regulation on Transfer Between Associate and Bachelor's Degree Programs, Double Major, Minor, and Credit Transfer Between Institutions at Higher Education Institutions" determined by the Higher Education Council (YÖK) for vertical, horizontal, and intra-university transitions.

Degree Requirements and Rules

To graduate from the program, students must have successfully completed the 240 ECTS credits, have a minimum GPA of 2.00, and not have been expelled from the university for reasons stated in Article 40 of the Gaziantep University Associate and Bachelor's Education-Training and Examination Regulation.

Employment Opportunities for Graduates

Graduates of the department are employed as "special education teachers" in Special Education Schools under the Ministry of National Education, Guidance Research Centers, Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers, Special Education Practice Schools, Special Education Kindergartens, and Special Education Preschool Classes. Additionally, department graduates will have the opportunity for an academic career with postgraduate education in relevant departments of universities.

Transition to Higher Degree Programs

Graduates who successfully complete the special education teacher education bachelor's program can enroll in postgraduate programs in relevant fields if they achieve a valid score in the ALES exam and relevant foreign language exams.

The assessment methods for each course are specified in the course descriptions prepared by the relevant faculty members. Exams and course grades are governed by the Gaziantep University Associate and Bachelor's Education-Training and Examination Regulation.
